This is my jellyfish. I drew this design and it was very emotional for me seeing it come to life, and seeing the artist, Matt, take such care in portraying it just how I wanted. It was a collaboration of talents. We clicked right away and we were laughing and talking the whole time. He had freckles. <3 It was done in Rehobeth Beach, at Electric Tiger Tattoo on August 1. The experience was sensual and intimate, I was face to face with the artist the whole time. As he worked, I watched every line become part of me. The pain was pleasurable, which sounds weird, but it was.
I had been thinking about getting this tattoo ever since I drew it about 8 months ago. The tentacles represent pain because of their sting, and the Medusa, or body, represents the simplicity of nature, also the genius of it. One of the tentacles spells out “float” which has been an important concept for me growing up. Whether it was staying afloat while I was severely depressed, or floating in whatever direction my life was taking me, it is a constant reminder that I can’t plan out everything perfectly.
The jellyfish propels water and floats with the current, the water carries him and to me this is a beautiful example of trust. I have learned to trust the universe around me and just go with the flow, aka “float”.
